JOB DESCRIPTION

Veterinary Assistants are vital members of veterinary care teams who provide support to veterinarians and veterinary technicians in delivering healthcare services to animals. They play a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of veterinary clinics, hospitals, or animal care facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Entry is possible without formal academic qualifications, although some employers may ask for GCSEs/S grades. There is a variety of vocational qualifications available, including NVQs/SVQs in Animal Care at Levels 1 and 2, in Dog Grooming at Levels 2 and 3, and BTEC qualifications and apprenticeships relating to Horse Care.

TASKS

  • Safely and gently handle animals during examinations, treatments, and procedures..
  • Ensure the comfort and well-being of animals in the clinic..
  • Prepare examination rooms and assist veterinarians during consultations, surgeries, and medical procedures..
  • Hand instruments, restrain animals, and perform other tasks as directed..
  • Provide basic care to animals, including feeding, administering medications, and monitoring post-operative recovery..
  • Observe and report any changes in an animal's condition to veterinary staff..
  • Assist with laboratory work, including sample collection, preparation, and analysis..
  • Perform routine tests such as bloodwork or urinalysis under supervision..
  • Assist with positioning animals for X-rays and other diagnostic imaging procedures..
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed during radiographic processes..
  • Greet clients, obtain relevant information, and provide assistance with paperwork..
  • Relay information from veterinarians to clients regarding treatment plans and post-care instructions..
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for each animal..
  • Input information into computer systems and assist with administrative tasks..
  • Clean and sterilize equipment, examination rooms, and surgical areas..
  • Follow protocols to maintain a sanitary environment..
  • Assist in managing inventory, ordering supplies, and ensuring sufficient stock of necessary items..
  • Keep track of expiration dates for medications and supplies..
  • Provide educational information to clients on topics such as preventive care, nutrition, and general animal health..
  • Assist in client education programs and community outreach..
